Q Legal Representation and Social Class [WLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4] [CLOs: 1, 2, 4, 6] Prior to beginning work on this discussion, listen to the interview with Stephen B. Bright, The Quality of a Legal Defense: Does it Matter if You’re Rich or Poor? (Links to an external site.) Additionally, read chapters 3 and 4 from the textbook. Your initial post should be at least 350 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and at least one other scholarly resource. Please properly cite in the body of your work and at the end of your work your required references. Use the UAGC Writing Center (Links to an external site.)’s Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.) and Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.) resources for additional guidance. Please respond to the following items: • What role does geographic location play in the quality of representation provided by the public defender? • How does the overburdened public defense system contribute to issues of wrongful conviction? • Contrast the legal representation described by Bright to the level of representation available to white-collar, corporate, and environmental crimes. • Considering the “war on drugs,” discuss what role the “war on drugs” might play in contributing to an overburdened public defense system? • What relationship exists between race, the war on drugs, and the overburdened public defender system? • How can we solve the problems of an overburdened public defense system and racial discrimination in the criminal justice system? Guided Response: Please read several of your classmates’ initial posts and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Your peer responses should focus on the course concepts and be scholarly in nature. As you respond, evaluate the following: • Do you agree with your classmate? Why or why not? • What additional evidence have you found that can support your classmate’s claims? • Be sure to support any opinions you have with credible, scientific evidence.

• Collica & Furst (2012) accepted the fact that geographical locations play an important role in the representation by the public defender. Some of the geograophic locations have a relatively more affluent community than the other areas. Public defenders who belong to the poorer communities fail to collect adequate resources such as investigators and forensic experts who can assess a crime scene and collect proper evidences. The clients of these types of public defenders tend to be pushed towards a plea bargain.
